Talisman Backup Management Ltd.

Why Backup?

All computer systems are subject to failure or loss of data from events like a hard drive crash, virus infection, accidental deletion or industrial sabotage. The computer itself is also at risk from physical influences such as fire, flood or theft. A backup of your data is very important to protect you from these risks.

Regular, Offsite Backups

Backups are fundamental, but unless your data is stored securely offsite (at a different physical location from your computer), you are only protecting yourself against a small fraction of the risk.

Backups must be:

  1. Frequent enough to avoid losing your most recently recorded data

  2. Done at suitable regular intervals

  3. Stored securely offsite to protect the backup if the computer is lost or damaged

  4. Kept for an appropriate length of time to recover historic data

  5. Cost effective

  6. Fast and simple to restore

What are the risks to my data?

All computer users are exposed to a common set of risks. The greatest risks are usually hard drive crash, virus infection or accidental deletion. Less likely risks, but still just as devastating are fire, flood, theft or industrial sabotage.

The size of each risk to your data is unique to you, and is dependent on the way your computer is operated and the environment it spends its time in.

At Talisman Backup Management we know every risk can be eliminated or it's impact minimised. We are totally committed to protecting your data against all risks.

What is wrong with the backup I do now?

Method: Most backup methods involve someone spending their time doing a backup to removable media, then either storing the backup with the computer, or, removing it offsite at the end of the day.

Hard Drive Failure, Fire, Flood or Theft

Often with a physical failure or destruction of the computer, the latest backups sitting in the vicinity are lost also.
You may have to go back several days to the most recent offsite backup that is needed for restore.

Virus Infection or Sabotage

Due to the minimal number of backup generations most commonly retained (often only ten or so), it is usually the case that the damage occurs on every backup.

Accidental file deletion

This can be quite a common occurrence. Unfortunately, if you are managing your backups well, by securing them offsite, it can take time and inconvenience to retrieve the right backup and restore the data.

Media: The reliability of CDs, floppy disks, tapes, and removable disks, as a complete backup solution, is inadequate to rely on for your critical data. To get similar security and reliability to a NovaNet-WEBTM backup you would need to perform three copies of every backup, and remove them to a safe location immediately.
